Skinny Jeans and Ballet?!?!
Of course, wearing skinny jeans to ballet class is absurd, even highly unusual. So what should you wear to ballet class, jazz class or other forms of structured dance?
Dance retailers carry an abundance of styles, colors and sizes of dancewear within a wide range of prices. Young dancers are asked to come to class wearing proper dance attire for specific reasons.
Dance wear caters to the needs of a dancer’s body: it is form fitting, allowing the teacher to see the spinal alignment and the musculature of the body; it is durable, flattering and modest; it is important that your dance clothing is not too baggy or too tight and fits comfortably. This allows your teacher to see the body, giving better corrections and helps the dancer to feel comfortable in what he/she is wearing.
Aside from aesthetic fit, proper dance clothing actually helps to build a community within the studio walls. Like a corps de ballet, dancers feel unified and as part of a community when they are all dressed alike. A group of dancers wearing proper clothing looks professional, put together and connected as a group. By avoiding street clothes, dancers do not have to worry about brand names, logos or designs- making their time in the dance studio more enjoyable. Essentially, dance wear creates community and brings a smile to our dancing faces!
If you haven’t had a chance to check out some of the great new fall fashions in the dance retail stores or are looking for something new, Evolutions School of Dance recommends Classique Dance and Activewear.
